  1. 1889-1964. Indian nationalist politician,
  2. prime minister from 1947. Before partition
  3. (the division into India and Pakistan) he led
  4. the socialist wing of the nationalist
  5. Congress Party, and was second in influence
  6. only to Mahatma Gandhi. He was imprisoned
  7. nine times 1921-45 for political activities.
  8. As prime minister from the creation of the
  9. dominion (later republic) of India Aug 1947,
  10. he originated the idea of nonalignment
  11. (neutrality towards major powers). His
  12. daughter was Indira Gandhi. He was born in
  13. Allahabad and educated at a UK public school
  14. and Cambridge University.
